5 The inhabitants of Samaria will fear
For the ^{▼▼As in some ancient versions; MT calves
,} ^bcalf of ^cBeth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its ^didolatrous priests ^{▼▼Or who used to rejoice over}will cry out over it,
Over its ^fglory, since it has left it.
6 The thing itself will be brought to ^gAssyria
As a gift of tribute to ^{▼▼Another reading is the great king; or the contentious king
,} ⁱKing Jareb;
Ephraim will ^{▼▼Lit receive shame}be ^kseized with shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its ^lown plan.
7 Samaria will be ^mdestroyed with her king,
Like a twig on the surface of the water.
8 Also the ⁿhigh places of Aven, the ^osin of Israel, will be destroyed;
^pThorns and thistles will grow on their altars;
Then they will ^qsay to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
